condition

The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.: These works are mostly in original condition. The canvases are unlined and have probably never been removed from their original stretchers. The paint layer has cracked slightly in all four compositions, particularly in the composition of Spring, but there does not appear to be any instability. The canvases could be tightened. The stretchers cannot be expanded, so tightening the canvases would require either new stretchers or some reinforcement to the tacking edges. The figures of all four seem to be cleaned and lightly varnished, but the gilded backgrounds do not seem to have been varnished. The compositions of Spring and Winter are in excellent condition. In Spring, there is a scratch in the lower right and a loss and a slight stain in the center of the bottom edge. The gilded background and figure are in remarkably good condition. In Winter, some cracking has developed in the gilding at the bottom center, and there are a couple of losses beneath the figure in the gilding. The composition of Summer has suffered damage along the bottom edge. There are fairly significant areas of restoration in the lower center, lower right and lower left, including a diagonal scratch running 6 inches from the lower left quadrant. These restorations do require some attention from a gilder, but the remainder of the picture is in good condition. The composition of Autumn is in lovely condition. Some weakness has received retouches in the deep red color beneath the chalice held by the figure. There are a couple of tiny dots of retouching in the figure, but they are minor. Given the delicate nature and scale of the works, and the gilded backgrounds, the condition is very good overall In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion. NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
