(1.447 oz, 45 g AGW). 1893 Amateur Athletic Union of the United States Award Medal. .999 Fine. 45.0 mm medal, with eagle clasp at 12 o'clock and suspended from red-white-blue ribbon, at the top of which is a gold pinback bar marked CHAMPIONSHIP on the front. 45.0 x 89.0 mm overall, 45.87 grams overall, medal 24 karat, pinback 12 karat. Central reverse inscribed HORIZONTAL BAR / NEW YORK / APRIL 7'' 1893. / HENRY ZETTLER. Bright gold metal parts, the medal with light hairlines, yet no sizeable blemishes, ribbon with fraying at top that affects its attachment to the pinback, but the overall product is complete. Smedley's standard reference The Works of Victor David Brenner notes, "There are numerous imitations or reproductions of this medal - some quite close copies, others crude - but they lack Brenner's signature." Lot 4288 in our November 2025 Showcase Auction offered an exact example of the Smedley-2 attribution, with the artist's signature and maker's name V.D.BRENNER.FECIT R.STOLL MAKER N.Y. along the lower reverse border. The medal offered here, however, lacks both, and is one of the "imitations or reproductions" referred to by Smedley.
