1652 Oak Tree Shilling. Noe-7, Salmon 5-D, W-480. Rarity-5. IN at

The Picker-Partrick Noe-7 Oak Tree Shilling 1652 Oak Tree Shilling. Noe-7, Salmon 5-D, W-480. Rarity-5. IN at Bottom. MS-62 (NGC). CAC. 71.0 grains. Struck from an advanced state of these dies, although not as late as the state seen on the NGC MS-62 Noe-7 that appeared in our November 2025 Showcase Auction, lot 4346. The reverse does display several prominent internal cud breaks at right, but here the obverse die has not yet failed to a point where the central obverse detail has become indistinct in places. As such, we note a virtually complete oak tree with fully discernible trunk and branch features, ground line clear, root structure faint, although portions of it are discernible with patience. The obverse impression is off center to 3 o'clock, border into the letter THVSETS IN to one degree or another, although all are discernible except for the V, which is mostly beyond the flan and soft at its base. The left border on this side shows a trace of outer beading beyond the letters ASA, the S bisected by a gentle vertical crease that is opposite the vertical reverse cud break through the letters ND A. Regarding the reverse impression, it is off center to 11 o'clock, letters EW ENGLA run off the flan and/or are otherwise soft, lower right border with traces of outer beading from 2:30 to 7 o'clock. The planchet is charmingly out of round, clips most prominent at right obverse, short wedge-shaped split in the flan at the letter N in IN. Both sides are warmly toned in light pewter gray, reverse with enhancing steely-russet overtones that provide further visual appeal. Somewhat subdued overall to help explain the MS-62 grade from NGC, but not even close inspection with a loupe reveals a mentionable handling mark to surfaces that are pleasingly smooth when admired in hand. In terms of certified grade this is one of the finest Noe-7 Oak Trees that we have ever offered, and certainly in recent years. Both Ford coins are nicer, of course, but the Kendall specimen in our March 2015 Baltimore Auction is clearly lower grade in its PCGS EF-40 holder; the extensive Syd Martin cabinet lacked this Noe number entirely. Whether you are a high grade colonial era type collector or advanced specialist in Massachusetts Bay Colony silver, this represents a significant find worthy of serious consideration. Provenance: Property from an Alabama Family. Earlier ex Richard Picker; Donald Groves Partrick; Heritage's FUN Signature Auction of January 2015, lot 5535. PCGS# 898265. BASE PCGS# 45362. NGC ID: 2ARL. Click here for certification details from NGC.
