1750-1800 - Wine glass - Glass - Special-occasion glass

A splendid antique gilded and faceted (hexadecagonal) occasion glass from circa 1780 with typical Dutch paintings. Decorated with a gilded ship and windmill amidst scrollwork motifs. A decoration specifically made for a Dutch client. It is also known as an occasion glass or friendship glass. The scene shows a three-masted sailing ship on turbulent water, flying birds, and on the other side a quintessential Dutch windmill in a landscape. This type of glass was often given as a wedding gift, to seal a trade treaty, or to toast to the prosperity of seafaring or a safe voyage. Height approx. 18.5 cm The gilding shows signs of wear. See photos for your own impression. Similar types of occasion glasses would be illustrated by Rainer Rückert, Die Glassammlung des Bayerischen Nationalmuseums München, Vol.2 (1982).
