1783 Nova Constellatio Copper. Crosby 1-A, W-1860. Rarity-4. CONSTELLATIO

1783 Nova Constellatio Copper. Crosby 1-A, W-1860. Rarity-4. CONSTELLATIO, Pointed Rays, Large U.S. EF-45 (PCGS). Warmly patinated autumn-orange and olive-brown surfaces are a bit dusky in appearance, but are smooth in the absence of distracting marks. Microgranular overall, but not disturbingly so, and the thin planchet fissure that meanders through the lower right obverse is also easily overlooked in most viewing situations. Central strike softness is a problem for many examples of this Crosby number, but while these features are not full here, the all-seeing eye and U.S. initials are boldly outlined and clear. Otherwise sharply defined for most design elements, although the right obverse border denticulation is off the flan, reverse impression also off center to 3 o'clock with the tops of the letters in JUSTICIA merging into the border. This is very much the scarcer and more conditionally challenged of the two Pointed Rays die pairings of the 1783 Nova Constellatio, and the Emerald Coast Collection once again delivers a well above average example that will appeal to other discerning numismatists. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. PCGS# 804. NGC ID: 2AYY. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
