Superior RR-4 VERMONTIS Copper Ex Roper 1785 Vermont Copper. Landscape. RR-4, Bressett 3-C, W-2015. Rarity-4. VERMONTIS. EF-45 (PCGS). Discounting RR-5 - a contemporary counterfeit known in both cast and struck formats - RR-4 is the only variety in the Vermont copper series with the VERMONTIS spelling in the obverse legend. As such, this is a significant and desirable design type unto itself. As with all Landscape Vermonts, RR-4 poses significant challenges to collectors in the areas of strike, planchet quality, and surface preservation. This one measures up quite well in all categories, especially planchet quality, as the flan is fully round with no fissures, laminations, or other flaws. The strike is not the best we've seen for this RR number, but it is still well above average with most features sharply defined and crisp. The impression is drawn to lower left obverse and upper left reverse, where there is no denticulation and, more significantly, considerable softness is seen. This is most significant on the obverse, where the bottoms of the date digits 178 are off the flan, letters VERMO in VERMONTIS absent to faint, end of plow handle and left edge of mountain soft to indistinct. The reverse periphery at upper left is correspondingly soft with the letters A QUA and some of the adjacent stars and rays indistinct. Rounding out our cataloging with the surfaces, we find both sides a tad granular, but pleasingly smooth in hand with richly original toning in a blend of medium and deep-rose brown colors. A solid collector-quality example of the VERMONTIS Guide Book variety, and also significant to specialists in Vermont coppers due to both the overall superior quality and impressive numismatic provenance. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier from our (Stack's) sale of the John L. Roper, 2nd Collection of Colonial & Early American Coins, December 1983, lot 318; our Philadelphia Americana Sale of September 2011, lot 1050. PCGS# 542. NGC ID: 2B56.
