1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 15-F, W-2900. Rarity-3. Mailed Bust

1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 15-F, W-2900. Rarity-3. Mailed Bust Left, CONNECT. EF-45 (PCGS). 122.0 grains. Deep, rich, charcoal and chestnut brown patina dominates the in-hand appearance for both sides, upper right with a splash of lighter walnut brown at and round the letters LI in LIB. There are minor flan fissures on that side through the seated figure's neck and at the lower right border, outside the shield. There are only a few minor handling marks scattered about, the surfaces pleasingly smooth in-hand with a generally hard, frosty texture and some nice gloss, this despite a touch of microroughness from ancient carbon build up. Obverse trivially off center to 6 o'clock with the bottom of the effigy's bust nearly resting on the border, reverse better centered but with thin to no denticulation along the border from 6:30 to 12 o'clock. Overall detail to the design elements is impressively bold to sharp. A handsome piece and solid representative of this Miller number as well as the 1787 CONNCT type, which also encompasses Miller 15-R and 15-S. Provenance: From the John Bolger Collection. Earlier ex our (Stack's) sale of the Estate of Herbert M. Oechsner, September 1988, lot 1082; Anthony Terranova, June 2002. PCGS# 367. NGC ID: 2B2U. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
