1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 33.39-s.1, W-3960. Rarity-2. Draped

Memorable Gem 1787 Connecticut Copper Miller 33.39-s.1 Ex Eric P. Newman 1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 33.39-s.1, W-3960. Rarity-2. Draped Bust Left. MS-64+ BN (NGC). 134.3 grains. Finding the ideal connoisseur quality Connecticut copper type coin is a major challenge. Acquiring something in high grade is not enough, as a Mint State assignment isn't enough to avoid soft and incomplete strikes, major planchet flaws, poor surface quality, or negative eye appeal. Even without consideration of die varieties and their rarity, a careful student of the series will see coins in identical Mint State grades vary by literal magnitudes, as both specialists and type collectors pay strong premiums for coins with excellent eye appeal, a complete strike, and no problems from before or after the moment of striking. Eric Newman had a longer lifetime of collecting than most to find his perfect high grade Connecticut copper - and the advantage of starting when coins like this were a few dollars at most. His collection of Connecticuts included four 1787 Draped Bust Left coppers in certified Mint State grades. Two were graded MS-61 BN (NGC), one of which had a substantial clip. Another was graded MS-63 BN (NGC), a lovely coin that brought $16,450 at the time. And this one, the coin presently offered, was his best one. Graded MS-65 BN (NGC), this one brought $35,250 in 2014. It did so for good reason. Both NGC and PCGS, who graded this MS-64+, have assessed this coin as the single finest 1787 Draped Bust Left Connecticut they have ever seen. The choice chocolate brown surfaces retain superb glossy luster on both sides, enlivened with abundant traces of mint color around design elements and peripheries. The strike is ideally centered on both sides, allowing for full legends, a bold and complete date, and most of the peripheral denticulation to be visible. While the centers of both sides retain planchet texture that wasn't fully struck out, manifesting as light marks near absolute center, the strike here is far stronger than encountered on many high grade Connecticuts. The obverse portrait is entirely detailed, the reverse figure shows good facial and drapery details, and the whole piece elegantly showcases the motifs as intended. Even the lines on the globe on the reverse are present. A die crack extends from 12 o'clock on the reverse into the field at the seated figure's chin, and some die spalling and metal fatigue from the die is seen around the peripheries, particularly beneath the letters LIB on the reverse. We note no planchet flaws, no post striking damage, or any other defects. This is simply one of the nicest Connecticut coppers that survives today. Provenance: From the Winslet Collection.
