1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 38-l.2, W-4200. Rarity-4. Draped Bust Left, AUCIORI. AU-50 (PCGS). 147.1 grains. This is a noteworthy example of the Miller number, the highest graded we have handled in at least two decades, based on our online auction archive entries. Lovely autumn-orange brown surfaces are further accented by hints of chestnut, olive and antique gold. A hint of microgranularity is noted solely for accuracy, the surfaces appearing hard and right during in-hand appreciation. There are also no troublesome handling marks or other post-production blemishes, a few tiny planchet pits easily overlooked and of no concern. Obverse impression off center to 5 o'clock with the effigy approaching the border at lower right, reverse similarly aligned to 1 o'clock with the upper right border lightly engaging to the top of the seated figure's head and the letter E in ET. Detail is universally bold to sharp throughout the design, including the erroneously applied AUCIORI that makes this a popular Guide Book type coin. A contender for Condition Census, this coin is nicer than Ford's cleaned VF, nicer than Perkins' flawed planchet VF, finer than Picker's Fine, better than the 1975 Pine Tree EAC coin, sharper than Robert M. Martin's PCGS EF-40 (which he considered Condition Census), and overall nicer than the scratched and flawed Syd Martin piece in PCGS EF-40. The mint red AU Hall-Taylor coin appears to be the finest. Provenance: From the John Bolger Collection. Purchased from Anthony Terranova, May 8, 2012. PCGS# 373. NGC ID: 2B2Y. Click here for certification details from PCGS. Image with the PCGS TrueView logo is obtained from and is subject to a license agreement with Collectors Universe, Inc. and its divisions PCGS and PSA.
