1788 New Jersey Copper. Maris 49-f, W-5470. Rarity-5. Head Left. VF-30 (PCGS).

1788 New Jersey Copper. Maris 49-f, W-5470. Rarity-5. Head Left. VF-30 (PCGS). 148.9 grains. SHI DS2. Both sides are handsomely toned in a blend of olive and rose-brown, the former color dominant on the obverse, latter on the reverse. Some old, hard surface scale is nestled among the plow on the obverse, reverse microscopically rough overall, both sides with scattered pre- and post-production marks that include few of sufficient size to be readily discerned during in-hand viewing. Right border on both sides missing denticulation and somewhat soft, but centering is quite good, major design elements suitably bold when allowances are made for both die state and grade. The Head Lefts are classics. Distinctive, attractive, scarce in high grade, they have always been top of mind and top of want lists for anyone who seeks to own more than a couple of New Jersey coppers. Fine is about the highest grade that's generally available, although most survivors suffer from roughness, poor axial alignment, ground patina, etc. A solid VF like this is a very desirable property. Provenance: From the John Bolger Collection. Purchased from Anthony Terranova, November 2001. PCGS# 527. NGC ID: 2B53. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
