Incredible Mint State 1797/5 Heraldic Eagle $5 BD-7 One of Just 16-20 Known 1797/5 Capped Bust Right Half Eagle. Heraldic Eagle. BD-7. Rarity-6+. 15-Star Obverse. MS-61 (PCGS). BD Die State a/a. A monumental rarity in the U.S. early gold series offering both numismatic significance and superior quality. The overdate seen on this variety is one of the boldest in the entire realm of American coinage, easily as plain as the 1942/1-D dime, 1918/7-D nickel, 1918/7-S quarter, and other well-known but comparatively common overdates. The 5 underdigit has not been effaced at all, though the flag of the 7 lines up precisely enough with the flag of the 5 to mask it. Well struck with bold definition to all but Liberty's central curls and the junction of the eagle's breast and shield, which areas are quite blunt, reverse with some original planchet roughness retained here. The surfaces are a delight to study with considerable mirror finish in the fields contrasting with an otherwise softly frosted finish. Warm honey-olive gold color overall, blooms of deeper rose-gold patina in the fields add further visual appeal. Free of individually distracting marks with uncommonly pleasing surfaces at the assigned grade level. Three die varieties of 1797 half eagle are known with the Heraldic Eagle reverse, and the BD-7 is the only one that is not unique. The other two known are each unique with both specimens in the National Numismatic Collection in the Smithsonian Institution. Of the 500-1000 coins struck from these dies just 16 to 20 coins survive. David Akers posited that 12 to 15 specimens were known when writing in 1988, while John W. Dannreuther more recently suggested 16 to 20 in 2006. This example numbers among the very finest known, ranked behind only the PCGS MS-62+ Carter-Pogue specimen and numerically tied with the NGC MS-61 Hilt example and the PCGS MS-61 Ferrendelli coin that most recently appeared in our Spring 2019 Baltimore Auction, lot 1141. To date, PCGS records only 11 grading events for this rare issue, with some duplication likely in that total. The 1797/5 $5, BD-7 is one of the most challenging issues for a specialist to obtain, and the present example is one of the most desirable specimens extant. Provenance: Property from an Alabama Family. Earlier from our (Stack's) sale of the James A. Stack, Sr. Collection, October 1994, lot 1036; Superior's Pittsburgh Elite Coin Auction of August 2004, lot 978; Heritage's Long Beach Signature Auction of June 2019, lot 3210. PCGS Population: 2; with a single MS-62+ finer. PCGS# 8077. NGC ID: BFX4. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
