"1797" (ca. 1816) Halliday Medal. Musante GW-57, Baker-70C. Copper

"1797" (ca. 1816) Halliday Medal. Musante GW-57, Baker-70C. Copper, Bronzed. Plain Rims. Mint State. 53.7 mm. A superior quality, visually appealing example of this exceptionally well-rendered medal. The obverse is mottled with olive-gray patina to a base of deep autumn-orange brown color. The reverse is superficially similar, although the olive-gray overtones are largely confined to the periphery. Both sides assume a bright, even chestnut brown appearance when viewed with the aid of direct lighting, under which circumstances appreciable semi-reflectivity can be discerned in the fields. Otherwise frosty in finish, the surfaces are hard and tight with small, wispy marks scattered about in the expansive field areas, most of which are easily overlooked during in-hand appreciation, and none of which are significant enough to be considered detracting. There is a bit of trivial carbon build up in the upper right obverse field, also on the reverse in the date area, which we mention solely for accuracy's sake. Expertly produced with sharp strike detail throughout, this is an originally and nicely preserved example of an extremely popular Washington medallic type, a piece that will see spirited bidding as it transitions into the next specialized cabinet.
