1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. 50 CENTS. GR-1. Rarity-5.

1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. 50 CENTS. GR-1. Rarity-5. AU-55 (NGC). This is a Condition Census example of the variety, according to Dick Graham in his Registry of Die Varieties of Reeded Edge Half Dollars 1836-1839 published in 2012 and confirmed by Koenings' latest 2024 census. Koenings has suggested downgrading the rarity factor to 4 (121-160 surviving examples) which corresponds with your cataloger's experience in the last fourteen years of collecting the series. Regardless, the variety is scarce, and Graham recommends that "you purchase this variety when you can find a specimen, and try to upgrade later if the opportunity presents itself." The surfaces are lightly toned on both sides, and the colorful peripheries nicely frame the brighter devices. Well struck, which is typical for the variety. Late Die State, as evidenced by the rim break between STATES OF and the extending crack through the eagle's beak which, while faint, is present. The GR-1 die pairing shares the same reverse as the 1836 Reeded Edge half dollar, which was the first of its denomination struck on a steam press and in a closed collar. Because of the shared reverse, it has been speculated that the 1837 GR-1 was possibly the first variety struck for the year. Jim Koenings Commentary: Prior to the discovery of the 1837 GR-27 die marriage in September 2024, 1837 GR-1 was the second rarest 1837 die marriage, rated as R-5 (31 to 75 known). My 2024 census for Reeded Edge halves had only 14 specimens reported. It took me considerable time to find this late die state specimen. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. Earlier from Heritage's Weekly Online Auction of July 14, 2020, lot 25128. PCGS# 6176. NGC ID: 24G4. Click here for certification details from NGC.
