1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. 50 CENTS. GR-2. Rarity-3. EF-45 (NGC). Pale golden-gray surfaces dominate on this early die state example of the GR-2 variety. The crack that begins above the D of UNITED and extends through much of the periphery is still light, whereas on middle and late die state examples it becomes considerably heavier, with a die chip and eventually a cud developing at its origin. Scattered marks are individually unremarkable, and the Jules Reiver pedigree noted on the label may prove desirable to the specialist. Jules Reiver was the first numismatist to study the series in depth, and when he published his Variety Identification Manual for United States Reeded Edge Half Dollars 1836-1839 in 1988, it was the first reference devoted to identifying the die varieties of the series. Despite his pioneering efforts, the manual could be difficult to use, relying heavily on text-based descriptions with very limited photographic illustration. Variety collecting within the series became considerably more accessible after Dick Graham published his extensively illustrated reference in 2012. Jim Koenings Commentary: This die marriage was known as 1837 JR-12 when it appeared as one of the few photographs shown in Jules Reiver's Variety Identification Manual for United States Reeded Edge Half Dollars, 1836-1839 in 1988. It has a large depressed circle above stripe 1 in the shield on the reverse. Graham determined emission order for 1837 die marriages by measuring their outside diameter. 1837 GR-2 through 1837 GR-5 used the same obverse die. Die deterioration determined emission order. My 2024 census had 17 specimens reported. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. Earlier ex Jules Reiver Collection; Heritage's Internet Coin Auction of February 14, 2014, lot 23457. PCGS# 6176. NGC ID: 24G4. Click here for certification details from NGC.
