Prized 1846 Proof Half Dollar Rarity Ex Pittman-Kaufman 1846 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. JD-1. Rarity-7-. Medium Date. Proof-65 (NGC). This is the Pittman-Kaufman Proof 1846 half dollar rarity, reunited in this sale with its counterpart in the Pittman-Kaufman Proof 1846 dime thanks to our offering of the Alabama Family Collection. (The coins are being offered individually.) Both are handsome NGC-certified Gems, the half dollar with gently mottled golden-apricot, rose and cobalt blue undertones backlighting dominant toning in blended mauve-gray and pewter-olive. Strike detail is impressively full throughout the design, direct lighting revealing subtle yet appreciable contrast between softly frosted motifs and lightly reflective fields. No marks or other blemishes distract during in-hand viewing, provenance concerns alone compelling us to mention a tiny nick in the right obverse field inside star 11 and a faint reverse spot at the upper left of the first letter A in AMERICA. From an estimated mintage of just 16 Proof half dollars of this date (per John W. Dannreuther, 2025), and one of the finest certified available to today's discerning numismatists. Provenance: Property from an Alabama Family. Earlier ex "Probably from Ed Frossard's November 4, 1892 sale which contained a complete 1846 Proof set with gold, the only such set known to have been offered at auction in the past," per David W. Akers; Numismatic Gallery (Abe Kosoff and Abner Kreisberg), July 20, 1949; John Jay Pittman; David W. Akers' sale of the John Jay Pittman Collection, Part II, May 1998, lot 1712, part of a complete original cased 1846 Proof set, half cent through $10 eagle; Mark Yaffee and Ken Goldman; Phil Kaufman, who acquired the silver coins in this set (the gold coins were sold separately); Heritage's sale of the Phil Kaufman Collection of Early Seated Proof Sets, Part III, April 2008 CSNS Signature Auction, lot 2386, which contained just the half dollar from the original set; Greensboro Collection; Heritage sale of the Greensboro Collection, Part II, January 2013 FUN Signature Auction, lot 5661. NGC Census: 3; 0 finer. The corresponding PCGS Population is 2/1 (Proof-66 finest). PCGS# 6390. NGC ID: 27T8. Click here for certification details from NGC.
