1863 Pattern Three-Cent Piece. Original. Judd-319, Pollock-384. Rarity-5.

Interesting 1863 Pattern Three-Cent Piece Judd-319 Original 1863 Pattern Three-Cent Piece. Original. Judd-319, Pollock-384. Rarity-5. Bronze. Plain Edge. Proof-66 RB (PCGS). CAC. Obv: Liberty head faces left with 13 stars around the border and the date 1863 below. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. This design is very similar to that used for regular issue Braided Hair cent production from 1843 to 1857. Rev: A laurel wreath surrounds the denomination 3 CENTS with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border. Pinkish and magenta iridescence saturates the familiar obverse facade, complimented by olive and pale sky-blue notions on the opposite side. Masterfully rendered and fully intricate, with glassy, virtually pristine fields throughout. Patterns of this type were produced in response to a proposal to make bronze three-cent pieces at a time when all silver and gold coins were absent from circulation in the East and Midwest and before the two-cent, nickel three-cent and nickel five-cent coins had become a reality. The median grade for certified examples is Proof-64 to 65. PCGS has never certified an example above the Proof-66 level. Judd-319 was produced having a greater range in weights than just about any other variety in the U.S. pattern series. Pollock recognized seven different weight classes from 119 grains up to 158 grains. The majority of examples have weights between 136 and 144 grains. As summed up by the uspatterns.com website: "They were made at numerous times on planchets of various thicknesses." Unfortunately, due to encapsulation, the weights of most specimens can no longer be determined. Provenance: From our (American Numismatic Auctions') New York Connoisseur's Collection sale, March 2006, lot 1340; our Baltimore Auction of March 2015, lot 7450. PCGS Population: 2; 0 graded higher in any category. PCGS lists only a single grading event for this Judd number in the RD category, at Proof-65. CAC Stickered Population: 2; 0. PCGS# 70477. NGC ID: 29EX. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
