1868 Pattern Liberty Seated Half Dime. Judd-638, Pollock-710. Rarity-6-.

1868 Pattern Liberty Seated Half Dime. Judd-638, Pollock-710. Rarity-6-. Nickel. Plain Edge. Proof-65 (PCGS). CAC. The obverse and reverse designs are the same that the Mint used to strike regular issue 1868 Liberty Seated half dimes. The strike is sharp on all the devices and the surfaces are attractive in every way, brilliant apart from a whisper of champagne-gold iridescence that is not readily evident at all viewing angles. This is one of many numismatic strikes secretly produced at the Mint for the private profit of officers of the institution. No record was kept of such oddities, and in no way were they intended as patterns. The idea of striking a half dime in nickel alloy would have been absurd. That said, we can be thankful to these long ago Mint officers who have created such a wonderful panorama of "patterns" for us to collect today. Provenance: From Legend Rare Coin Auctions' sale of the Steven Cook Collection of Patterns, Part I, May 2018 Regency Auction 26, lot 787. PCGS Population: 8; 8 finer in this category (all Proof-66). CAC Stickered Population: 3; 2. PCGS# 60856. NGC ID: 29NU. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
