Seldom-Encountered 1895 JD-3 Morgan Dollar 1895 Morgan Silver Dollar. JD-3. Rarity-4. Proof-62 (PCGS). CMQ. Along with JD-4, JD-3 is one of the two scarcities among the four die pairings identified for the 1895 Philadelphia Mint Morgan dollar issue. Writing in the 2025 volume in his United States Proof Coins reference series, John W. Dannreuther opines that JD-3 and JD-4 "may constitute the 90 coins delivered in September with the 790 Proofs for sets mostly comprised of the first two varieties [JD-1 and JD-2]." These 880 coins represent the total Proof silver dollar mintage of this date, as distinct from the 12,000-piece "semi-circulation strike" 1895 Philadelphia Mint delivery comprised of circulation strike planchets struck from Proof dies. Magnification readily reveals the primary diagnostic of the JD-3 attribution on the present Proof-62 example: a small gouge within the base of the letter E in LIBERTY on Liberty's headband. Somewhat muted silver-gray surfaces also reveal faint hairlines to account for the grade. The strike is full and there are no singularly distracting marks, however, which features enhance the appeal of this key date Morgan dollar. Provenance: From the Grossman Collection. PCGS# 7330.
