1896 Pattern Cent. Judd-1768, Pollock-1983. Rarity-5. Bronze. Plain

1896 Pattern Cent. Judd-1768, Pollock-1983. Rarity-5. Bronze. Plain Edge. Proof-64 RD (PCGS). CAC. Eagle Eye Photo Seal. Obv: A shield with thirteen stripes, having the motto E * PLURIBUS * UNUM above and the date 1896 below. Behind the shield are two crossed poles bearing a liberty cap on the viewer's left side and an eagle on the right. A scroll passing in front of the shield is inscribed LIBERTY. There are 13 stars at the border arranged seven left, six right. The border is beaded. On this obverse, the head of the eagle is under the center of the letter S in PLURIBUS, and the bottom forks of the scroll point between the fifth and sixth stars on the left and between the ninth and 10th stars on the right. Rev: The denomination 1 CENT is centered within a curved olive sprig with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. The border is beaded. On this reverse, the upright of the letter T in CENT points to the base of the upright of 1 in the denomination. Satiny pinkish-apricot surfaces deliver superior quality and eye appeal. A scarce survivor from an experimental issue that the Mint produced in search of a potentially better alloy for cent coinage than that in use at the time. Provenance: From our June 2022 Auction, lot 2287. PCGS Population: 2; 0 finer in this category. CAC Stickered Population: 1; 0. PCGS# 82222. NGC ID: 2AM8.
