1896-S Barber Dime. MS-66 (PCGS). CAC. OGH. Our last offering for this exceptional 1896-S dime was in Bowers and Merena's May 1996 sale of the Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection, in which it was cataloged as: A splendid lustrous gem exhibiting attractive, even golden gray toning on both the obverse and reverse. Only rarely seen this beautifully preserved. A prize certain to delight the connoisseur. Another legendary Barber dime that is today and for a very long time has been a key issue in all grades. We can only further highlight the rarity and significance of the present example by noting that, with just 575,056 pieces produced, the 1896-S has the lowest mintage among San Francisco Mint dimes of this type after only the 1913-S. This date and mint was saved in far fewer numbers, however, and it is rarer in Mint State than the 1913-S and more akin to the 1893-S, 1902-S and 1903-S in the finest grades. The Clapp-Eliasberg specimen is a important piece that is sure to see spirited bidding at auction. Provenance: Ex J.M. Clapp, acquired directly from the San Francisco Mint in August 1896; Clapp estate, 1942; Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection, May 1996, lot 1256. PCGS Population: 11; 3 finer (all MS-66+). CAC Stickered Population: 3; 0. PCGS# 4811. NGC ID: 23E2. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
