1897 Barber Dime. JD-4. Rarity-4. Proof-67 (PCGS). Retro OGH. A beautifully toned Superb Gem Proof that should be seen to be fully appreciated. The surfaces display multicolored toning that is most vivid when viewed with the aid of direct lighting, and includes shades of reddish-apricot, olive-gray and cobalt blue. Uniformly pristine surfaces support a full strike and modest cameo contrast. Despite a respectable (for the era) mintage of 731 pieces, the 1897 is the rarest Proof Barber dime from the 1890s with the exception of the 1893 and the legendary 1894-S. The present example is near the apex of quality among the survivors certified by PCGS, and it would make an impressive addition to an advanced Proof type or date set. Exquisite!
