1938 Jaguar SS100 2.5 Roadster Chassis No. 49029 with Heritage Certificate. One of just 198 built – with an estimated 120–140 still in existence. Historic classic with an attractive reserve price. The Jaguar SS100 is instantly recognisable. Its long bonnet and low-slung profile give it a distinctive appearance that remains unmistakable almost 90 years after its introduction. It was the car that firmly established Jaguar among the leading sports car manufacturers of its day, and the first of William Lyons’ cars to carry the Jaguar name. The “100” referred to its intended top speed of 100 mph - a figure that placed the SS100 among the fastest sports cars of the 1930s. An SS100 famously won the Alpine Trial ahead of Bugatti, while the model also achieved a number of impressive results in contemporary competition. This elegant British sports car was not only striking in appearance, but also offered the handling and driving characteristics required to compete at the highest level. This particular car, chassis no. 49029, was completed on 5 January 1938 and sold to a Mr Brown with racing in mind. By 1952, it was registered in Texas, where it is documented as having undergone a thorough and high-quality restoration. In 2003, the current owner discovered the car among the other vehicles in the Strøjer Collection on Funen, Denmark. Since then, it has been driven only occasionally, primarily in dry and fair weather. Throughout its current ownership, the car has been maintained by a local specialist, and this is reflected in the condition of its mechanicals. The engine runs smoothly and performs as it should. The car also presents well, with attractive paintwork and a well-preserved interior, although it is not intended to be a concours example. For those wishing to further enhance its cosmetic finish, some of the chrome could benefit from additional polishing. This would be a straightforward job, that would further enhance the car’s appearance while preserving its existing character. It is not every day that a car of this rarity comes to auction - particularly one offered with a reserve price that makes it well worth following closely.
