1957 Volkswagen Microbus Deluxe ‘Samba’ 23 Windows No reserve - Authentic 1st-generation model with 23 windows - High-quality full restoration - True to its original specification - No reserve 1957 Volkswagen Microbus Deluxe ‘Samba’ 23 Windows This rare and iconic Microbus Deluxe ‘Samba’ with its 23 windows left the factory on the 16th August 1957 for the USA, as evidenced by the certificate issued by Volkswagen stating that it is an authentic ‘241’ version. Painted in ‘sealing wax’ red, it was sourced in California in the late 1990s and subsequently imported to Europe. Guido Hommel acquired it from HK Engineering. In fact, he had long been searching for a fine, authentic example of the first generation, still in its original configuration. This particular example has indeed retained its original features, such as the 1,192 cc 30 hp engine, the specific gearbox for this generation, its 6-volt electrical system, and its ‘arrow’-type indicators (phased out in later versions). It is also worth mentioning that this particular vehicle was fitted with optional front indicators. As evidenced by pictures in the file, it had a full and high-quality restoration carried out. The substructure is in healthy condition, the bodywork is meticulously finished, and the paintwork is of nice quality. A file of invoices is also included, along with brochures and technical documentation. Considered as a genuine holy grail amongst ‘combi’ models, the ‘Samba’ Deluxe is the most sought-after version thanks to its particularly bright interior, enhanced by its 23 windows and large sunroof, which provide an invitation to escape for up to nine passengers. A vehicle in such outstanding condition is bound to attract enthusiasts of this model. Photos © Peter Singhof
