1961 Mercedes-Benz 190 SLR recreation No reserve

1961 Mercedes-Benz 190 SLR recreation No reserve - High-quality recreation - High performance, substantially uprated mechanically - Homage to a legendary model - No reserve In the light of the success of the 190 SL, Mercedes decided in the 1950s to produce a special ‘customer competition’ version. However, the refusal of the motorsport authorities to homologate this SLR (‘Sport Leicht Rennsport’) in the GT class compromised its chances of success and the project was abandoned, after six or seven cars had been built. Two of them, moreover, did well in competition, one winning its class in the 1956 Macau Grand Prix, the other claiming victory in the 1959 Hong Kong Rally. The spectacular looks of this model had plenty to appeal to enthusiasts, and Thierry Dehaeck decided to have a recreation built in his workshops. Based on a 1961 190 SL, the car is very faithful to the 190 SLR displayed today in the Mercedes Museum, with its cut-down doors, twin aero screens, centre-lock Rudge wheels, stripped-out interior, 300 SLR seats with tartan upholstery and its grey metallic paint with blue arrows on the front wings. The transformation is even more impressive under the bonnet, with a 2.7-litre block from a Mercedes W115, fed by Jenvey Heritage fuel-injection made to look like Weber carburettors with large trumpets, producing an estimated 200bhp. An aluminium radiator, a more powerful water pump, stainless-steel exhaust, EZ power steering and a competition fuel tank are also among the changes made. The result is a car with an extremely sporty character, true to the original model and with performance on track that will impress the most blasé of users, both for its acceleration and its handling. It will be sold with various documents, including period photographs, its factory build card, a press feature and a catalogue for the 190 SL. This high-quality build does justice to Mercedes’ attempt to add a competition version to the 190 SL range. We invite potential bidders to contact the relevant authorities in the country of destination to find out about the possibilities for registering this vehicle.
