2011 Despagne, Girolate - Bordeaux - 6 Bottles (0.75L)

Despagne Girolate Rouge 2011 An exceptional and unconventional expression of Bordeaux, Girolate Rouge is a prestigious single-vineyard cuvée crafted by the Despagne family in the Entre-Deux-Mers region. Made from 100% Merlot, this distinctive wine reflects an ambitious approach to viticulture, combining exceptionally high planting density with meticulous vineyard management to achieve remarkable concentration and depth. The south-facing vineyard is rooted in clay soils overlaying limestone bedrock, a terroir that lends the wine both its generous texture and distinctive mineral freshness. The 2011 vintage reveals an expressive bouquet of ripe blackberries, dark plums and rich berry fruit, complemented by notes of dark chocolate, graphite, vanilla and subtle toasted oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied and powerful, with impressive concentration, a velvety texture and substantial tannic structure. Beneath its opulent fruit profile, fresh acidity and mineral undertones bring balance and definition, leading to a long, persistent finish. Produced by the Despagne family, Girolate represents a bold and distinctive interpretation of Merlot, demonstrating the remarkable potential of Bordeaux’s less conventional terroirs. The 2011 vintage combines the richness and generosity of the grape with the structure and depth characteristic of a serious, age-worthy red Bordeaux. Awarded 90 points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, the 2011 Girolate was praised for its rich, chocolate-laced berry fruit, graphite nuances and substantial structure. A compelling choice for collectors seeking an individual expression of Bordeaux, this mature vintage offers an intriguing combination of power, complexity and distinctive terroir character.
