Fattoria Le Pupille Morellino di Scansano Riserva is a balanced and nuanced interpretation of this Maremma Toscana appellation. This label embodies the roots of Fattoria Le Pupille, the first wine produced and marketed by the estate in 1978 under the newly established Morellino di Scansano regulations, reserved for red wines made primarily from Sangiovese, of the local Morellino biotype. The bottle was originally called 'Rosso di Pereta', after the hamlet of the same name in the municipality of Magliano in Toscana. Fattoria Le Pupille's Morellino di Scansano Riserva is crafted from a solid base of Sangiovese, to which 10% Cabernet Sauvignon is added. The grapes come from the La Carla, Maiano, and Bozzino vineyards, where altitudes range between 50 and 250 meters above sea level. Here, the soils are predominantly sandstone, with abundant gravel and marly rocks alternating with layers of red clay. Harvest takes place in the second half of September for the Sangiovese and in October for the Cabernet Sauvignon, with the grapes being pressed in stainless steel tanks for temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation, combined with 25-30 days of maceration on the skins. After fermentation, the grapes mature for 15 months in large oak barrels of 10, 20, and 40 hectoliters. Visual examination reveals the Morellino di Scansano Riserva from the Fattoria Le Pupille winery, which displays an intense ruby ​​red color with purple highlights. Crisp hints of red fruits and flowers characterize the aromatic spectrum, along with balsamic, spicy, and herbal notes. The taste is soft and full, with a decisive fresh-savoury push and fine tannins that prelude the finish of good persistence on the sensations of the nose.
