Nicolás Catena Zapata 2021 The 2021 Nicolás Catena Zapata is a critically acclaimed, high-altitude Bordeaux-style red blend from the Uco Valley in Mendoza, Argentina. Revered as Argentina’s premier luxury cuvée, this vintage features a revamped label with a wax seal titled "Resurrección y Homenaje," commemorating the pre-phylloxera origins of its vines. The 2021 growing season was remarkably cool, yielding a wine praised for its exceptional freshness, linear precision, and long-term aging potential. 46% Cabernet Sauvignon: Sourced from the rocky, high-altitude Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary (1,450 meters above sea level). 44% Malbec: Sourced from the clay-and-gravel soils of the Nicasia Vineyard in Paraje Altamira (1,095 meters above sea level). 10% Cabernet Franc: Also sourced from the Nicasia Vineyard, adding pronounced herbal and peppery spice. The Catena Zapata Birth of Cabernet 2021 is a newly released, premium high-altitude red wine from Mendoza, Argentina, that celebrates the accidental genetic discovery of Cabernet Sauvignon. Crafted by head winemaker Alejandro Vigil alongside Laura and Adrianna Catena, this debut vintage blends science, history, and art to show Argentina’s prowess in producing world-class Cabernet. The Concept and The Label. The wine is named after the biological origin of Cabernet Sauvignon—which was discovered to be a spontaneous cross-pollination between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th-century France. The unique illustrated label depicts this history as a whimsical myth: The Fox represents Cabernet Franc (styled with attributes of Cardinal Richelieu, its first famous lover). The Siren (half woman, half bird) represents Sauvignon Blanc in her "savage glory".
