Marchesi Antinori – Cont’Ugo 2022 Tenuta Guado al Tasso – Bolgheri DOC Rosso Lotto di 6 bottiglie da 0,75 L – 100% Merlot Cont’Ugo 2022 is one of the most representative wines of the Guado al Tasso estate of the Antinori family, produced in the heart of Bolgheri, one of the most prestigious denominations in Tuscany. The peculiarity of Cont’Ugo is the choice to use exclusively Merlot, interpreting the Bolgheri terroir through a wine that blends depth and structure with the fragrance and softness typical of this grape variety. Tenuta Guado al Tasso The estate is located on the coast of the Upper Maremma, within the famous “Bolgheri amphitheater,” a plain surrounded by hills and open to the sea. Guado al Tasso covers about 320 hectares of vines. The proximity of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the constant sea breezes help moderate temperatures, while the diurnal temperature variation favors balanced ripening and a notable aromatic expression of the grapes. The Cont’Ugo terroir Cont’Ugo comes from Merlot vineyards located between 45 and 60 meters above sea level, on clay-limestone soils of mostly alluvial origin. According to Antinori, these characteristics allow Merlot to reach great depth and complexity while maintaining the fragrance and exuberance of the fruit. Vintage 2022 The 2022 vintage in Bolgheri was characterized by hot and dry conditions for much of the season. Rainfall during the summer supported the final phase of ripening, and the grapes arrived at harvest with a good balance between sugars, acidity and aromatic expression. The Merlot destined for Cont’Ugo was harvested between August 30 and September 9, 2022, about ten days earlier than average. Vinification and aging After manual harvest and careful selection in the winery, the grapes are transferred to stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature. Alcoholic fermentation and maceration last about 20 days in total, with temperatures managed between about 25 and 30 °C depending on the characteristics of the different lots. Subsequently the wine is transferred to barriques, where malolactic fermentation completes. The best lots are then selected and blended, to then mature for a further 12 months in second-passage barriques. The 2022 vintage was bottled in January 2024. Organoleptic characteristics Cont’Ugo 2022 shows an intense ruby red color. On the nose elegant aromas of blackcurrant, raspberry and ripe cherry emerge, accompanied by light nuances of Mediterranean scrub and undergrowth. On the palate it shows good structure and excellent persistence, maintaining the fruity character typical of Merlot. The finish is pleasant and lingering, with a return of red fruit sensations. It is a Bolgheri that combines the softness of Merlot with the depth and personality of the Guado al Tasso terroir, resulting in something interesting to drink now or to leave to evolve further in bottle.
