20th C. Mexican Folk Art Ceramic Carousel - Polychrome Swinging Figures

Mexico, Jalisco, Santa Cruz de las Huertas, Ortega workshop. A polychrome ceramic carousel or swing toy attributable to the Ortega family workshop of Santa Cruz de las Huertas, Jalisco. The piece is assembled from several components: a round blue base with a central support pole, a conical umbrella-form canopy that balances on the tip of the pole and rotates freely, and six hand-modeled rider figures suspended from wire hooks at the canopy edge. The canopy is painted with geometric and foliate panels in green, blue, red, plum, and pink, and the dangling riders show the bright, expressive detailing characteristic of the workshop's mid-century folk toy production.
