Pre-Columbian, Panama and Costa Rica, Gran Chiriqui; Colombia and Ecuador, Carchi-Narino, Capuli. A group of five earthenware vessels gathered from two ceramic traditions of the southern isthmus and the northern Andes. Two globular jars with everted collars carry banded and curvilinear ornament in negative resist, the smoked ground reserving pale motifs against burnished red slip, a technique associated with Gran Chiriqui workshops. A diminutive burnished flask bears a small modeled figure emerging at the shoulder beside its mouth, in the manner of Carchi-Narino Capuli work. Two elongated, tapering vessels with flaring rims, suspended on wire, are likely Costa Rican; their plain polished surfaces, one buff and one red-slipped, suggest containers for lime or other prepared substances. Together they trace the utilitarian and mortuary ceramic repertoire of an interlocking trade corridor that ran from Panama into the highlands of Colombia and Ecuador. Negative resist, sometimes called smudged or fugitive resist, was achieved by masking the burnished surface with a perishable substance (wax, resin, or clay slurry) before a reducing, smoke-rich firing. The masked zones stayed light while the exposed ground darkened, and the mask was then removed. The result is a design defined by absence rather than by applied pigment, and it survives only where the burnish beneath it has not abraded away. Gran Chiriqui is a regional designation rather than a single people, covering the archaeological cultures of the Diquis Delta in southern Costa Rica and western Panama. The Capuli phase of the Carchi-Narino highlands, on the modern Colombia-Ecuador border, is better known for its seated coquero figures with distended cheeks, tokens of coca chewing, and for the small modeled adornos that cling to the shoulders of its otherwise austere flasks and bowls.
