At Homer, in the nineteenth canto of the Odyssey, Penelope explains to the still-unrecognized Odysseus that dreams reach humans through two different gates: through the Horn Gate come those dreams that come true, real and unimpeded; through the Ivory Gate those that are beautiful to behold but deceptive, with no substance behind them. This skull bears both gates within it at once. Above the face, the semi-transparent druzy area opens like a clear window, framed by plain white quartz — calm, translucent, almost honest in its restraint: the Horn Gate. The rest of the skull, by contrast, explodes into color: wild banding, abrupt phase jumps, a constant alternation between violet and white tones, glorious and overwhelming like the Ivory Gate, whose beauty dazzles but makes no fixed statement. Mineralogically, Dream Chevron Amethyst is a banded variety of amethyst in which violet, chroma-rich quartz layers alternate with white, iron-free quartz layers in V-shaped (Chevron) patterns— the result of repeated growth phases with shifting fluid composition. If a cavity remained open during this growth, the quartz could not grow as a flat banding, but would continue inward as a fine crystal druse — exactly that semi-transparent, drusy surface that opens above the face here.
