96 g Tiger Iron Eye – golden hue

96 g Tiger Iron Eye – golden hue

In 1967, the young biologist Lynn Margulis proposed an idea that her field deemed ridiculous. The mitochondria, the power plants of our cells, had once been free-living bacteria. Long ago a larger cell swallowed them, but instead of being digested, they remained and became a part of her. About fifteen journals rejected her paper before it could be published. Today, the endosymbiotic theory is considered established. To this day, mitochondria carry their own genetic material inside them, a memory of the free life they once led. One side of this skull seems to tell exactly that. In bright orange and brown, ring after ring wraps around a black-bordered nucleus, like a cell within a cell. The other side belongs entirely to light: an extremely changeable chatoyance that flashes silver or gold depending on the angle. Stone and mitochondrion even share a backstory. Tiger Iron formed in Precambrian banded iron formations. These deposits became possible only when early microbes released oxygen into the sea, causing the dissolved iron to precipitate layer by layer. On this very oxygen rests what mitochondria still do in every one of our cells today: they extract energy from it.
