A Beautiful Pendant Brooch Made of Gold and Platinum with 3.40 Ct

The grand ball, the highlight of the season, is slowly drawing to a close. Dinner has been served, the band is still playing, and the champagne has heated up the atmosphere. An almost stifling heat has taken hold of the ballroom, and, longing for a bit of cool air, we escape to the wide balcony overlooking the dark park and, in the distance, the city lights. A refreshing breeze blows toward us, bringing relief; the laughter of the others drifts softly to our ears; the stars twinkle; and the pale moon rises behind the treetops. This exquisite piece of jewellery from c. 1910 exudes all the splendor of the Belle Époque. A composition of elegantly curved lines, lavishly set with diamond roses, frames five large diamonds, the largest of which weighs approximately 1.35 ct. Like the petals of precious flowers, the large diamonds are set as solitaires on delicate prongs, giving them an almost floating effect. Small laurel leaves arranged in pairs, representative of the so-called garland style, complement the softly flowing Art Nouveau forms of the era, while another old-cut diamond hangs freely from the piece. The gemstones are set in platinum mountings, typical of the period, to further enhance the brilliance of the white diamonds; the back of the piece of jewellery, however, is crafted from gold. The piece features a screw-on brooch clasp as well as concealed hooks on the back, allowing it to be worn not only as a brooch but also as a pendant. According to its hallmarks, this magnificent piece —set with a total of 3.40 ct of diamonds—was crafted in Russia between 1908 and 1927. A truly exquisite jewel from the Tsarist era that wonderfully embodies the international style of jewellery design of those years. It found its way to us here in Berlin.
