The Pipe-smoking Peasant Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1934. Interesting figurative work executed in the manner of Vincent van Gogh, signed and dated 1934 in the lower left corner. The composition depicts a peasant in profile, smoking a pipe, standing before a wide cereal field. The figure is dressed with a hat, a work shirt, and a garment or sack on the back, building an image deliberately linked to the rural world and the farm worker. The choice of motif has clear resonances with Vincent van Gogh’s pictorial universe, for whom peasants, sowers, agricultural workers, and popular figures were recurring themes throughout different periods of his production. The work captures that same intention to grant monumental pictorial dignity to a humble, everyday figure. From a stylistic standpoint, the painting approaches expressive post-impressionism. The artist dispenses with an academically precise modeling to construct the character through visible brushwork, juxtaposed colors, and deliberately defined contours. Especially characteristic is the treatment of the face, built with ochres, earth tones, pinks, oranges, and greenish shadows, partially moving away from naturalistic color. This use of brush direction as an expressive resource is another element that stylistically aligns the work with the language developed by Van Gogh. The choice of a peasant figure smoking a pipe also connects with a long tradition of European realism and post-impressionism, where rural characters were represented not as anecdotal figures, but as autonomous protagonists of painting. The work is signed and dated “1934” in the lower left corner. Its chronology, several decades after Vincent van Gogh’s death in 1890, confirms that it should be understood as a later work executed in the manner of the Dutch master, within the significant influence his painting exerted on numerous European artists during the early decades of the 20th century.
