A PAIR OF ARTIFICIAL STONE RECUMBENT GREYHOUNDS ATTRIBUTED TO AUSTIN & SEELEY, CIRCA 1840 62cm high, 133cm long, 42cm wide A corresponding pair of greyhounds of the same size feature in the company's 1841 catalogue: 'Austin and Seeley's Artificial Stone Ornaments'. For an identical pair of dogs, see Christie's London, The Secret Courtyard: The Seago Collection (6129), 9th June 1999, lot 393 (£17,250 incl. BP) Felix Austin started making artificial stone in 1828 and established works in New Road, London. Austin's material was made from Portland cement, broken stone, pounded marble and coarse sand and Austin encouraged leading architects and designers to work for him. Around 1840 Austin entered into partnership with John Seeley who had trained at the Royal Academy Schools. In 1841 Austin and Seeley published their first catalogue, 'Collection of Ornaments at Austin & Seeley's Artificial Stone Works for Gardens, Parks and Pleasure Grounds...'. The firm continued in production until about 1872.
