A.R. Penck - “TTT – Man with a Wheel,” ca. 1990s Screen print on handmade paper Approximately 100 × 70 cm Signed in pencil Labeled “E.A.” – Artist’s Proof About the work With TTT – Man with a Wheel, a large-format original graphic by A. R. Penck from the 1990s comes to the call. The work presents, in a reduced, symbolic form, a human figure with a wheel and thereby exemplifies Penck’s unmistakable visual language. Penck had been developing an independent visual sign system since the 1960s. Humans, animals, numbers, geometric shapes and seemingly elementary symbols are reduced to a few lines and combined with one another. The resulting “standard” figures are among the best-known motifs of his oeuvre. His imagery fuses archaic-looking signs with influences from graffiti, prehistoric art and modern communication. The sheet offered here is labeled “E.A.”. The abbreviation stands for Épreuve d’artiste, i.e., artist’s proof. Such prints were produced outside the regular numbered edition for the artist or as reference copies. The “TTT” appearing on the sheet refers to Triple Trip Touch, the experimental Free Jazz formation founded by A. R. Penck together with musician Frank Wollny. Penck’s interest in music and improvisation was closely connected with his visual work: rhythm, repetition and reduced signs are reflected in both domains. The “Man with a Wheel” thus does not appear as a naturalistic figure, but as an elementary sign for the human being and his movement. Together with the “TTT,” it creates a characteristic combination of Penck’s sign world, dynamism and musical improvisation – a particularly appealing facet of his oeuvre. The artist A. R. Penck, born Ralf Winkler (1939–2017), Dresden, Germany, died in 2017 in Zurich. He is regarded as one of the significant German artists of the postwar period. His extensive oeuvre encompasses painting, drawing, graphic arts and sculpture. Penck became known especially for his reduced figures and signs, often reminiscent of prehistoric cave painting, pictograms and graffiti. In addition to the visual arts, Penck also engaged intensively with music and literature.
