A.R. Penck (1939–2017) – manually signed and numbered graphic A.R. Penck, born Ralf Winkler, is among the distinctive and internationally significant representatives of post-war German art. With his unmistakable visual language of archaic-looking signs, schematic figures, lines and symbols, he developed a visual vocabulary that recalls both prehistoric cave paintings and graffiti, pictograms and a universal sign language. The present graphic shows characteristic, expressively reduced line and symbol figures in Penck's typical, immediacy-driven formal language. Human figures, signs and lines enter into a tense dialogue and convey the impression of an original, almost coded communication. It is precisely the deliberate reduction to elementary forms that gives the sheet its strong presence while also leaving room for viewers to interpret on their own. The work is signed in pencil bottom right with “ar penck” and handwritten numbered bottom left. The edition appears to be a graphic print; due to the available information, the exact printing technique cannot be determined beyond doubt. Penck’s works combine spontaneity, typified signs and a deliberately archaic aesthetics. His iconic “stick figures” and codes became a unmistakable trademark of his oeuvre and made him a key figure between informal, neo-expressionist and conceptually inclined art. Artist: A.R. Penck (Ralf Winkler), 1939–2017 Title: Untitled Technique: Lithography, presumably aquatint Signature: bottom right in pencil “ar penck” Size: approx. 76x56 cm Numbering: bottom left, handwritten number Representation: expressive line and symbol figures Epoch: German post-war art / Neo-expressionism Condition: very good, see photos A characteristic sheet by the eminent German artist A.R.
