A red glass-paste intaglio of The Triumph of Priapus / The Triumph of the Phallus - an elaborate erotic mock-triumph in which a monumental phallus is conveyed ceremonially upon a decorated wheeled chariot towards an enormous representation of the female genitalia, at one end of the composition the vulva is represented monumentally, apparently opened or attended by erotes, across the centre advances a lively Bacchic procession of erotes, maenads or bacchantes and animals, including a bull and goat ridden by children or erotes, several female figures dance or sound trumpets, at the opposite end the enormous phallus is displayed horizontally upon an architectural triumphal chariot beneath a canopy or baldachin, while a winged Eros above appears to approach or crown it, probably English, late 18th or early 19th century, circa 1785-1825, after the condensed glyptic version of Francesco Salviati's Triumph of the Phallus, subsequently published by Pierre-François Hugues d'Hancarville in 1784, red glass paste, engraved in intaglio, Approximately 35 x 24 x 4cm
