Alle Auktionen / Kunst und Drucke / Abraham Casting Out Hagar and Ishmael Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn

An exceptionally fine impression of New Hollstein’s only state, with touches of burr along the right contour of Abraham’s turban, printing with excellent contrasts and clearly defined cross-hatching in the masonry and in the richly detailed garments of Ishmael and Abraham. With a fine, narrow margin around the platemark. In his depiction of this Old Testament episode, Rembrandt includes Sarah and her son Isaac watching from a window in the background. Abraham’s inner conflict is subtly conveyed by his position on the threshold of the house and by the small dog seated on the steps, traditionally associated with fidelity. While one hand gestures towards Hagar, directing her away, the other is extended towards her in a gesture that seems almost to restrain her, lending the moment a sense of hesitation and emotional ambiguity. – Tiny paper losses at the upper left and lower right corners. A minute nick at the centre of the upper edge. Verso with a small crease. Otherwise in good condition. | 1606 Leiden - Amsterdam 1669 | 15.-18. Jahrhundert | Druckgrafik | Nummer: 26x2049
