Æ (XX-XXI) - Set of 3 – “Totoro: When the Forest Was...

**Æ (Spain, b. 1977) — Totoro: Quiet Companions of the Rain (2025) — Hand-Finished Mixed Media Triptych · Set of 3** This atmospheric monochrome triptych revisits the world of Totoro as a place of shelter, companionship, and quiet wonder. Set among rain-soaked forests, traditional wooden architecture, and misty rural landscapes, the three compositions capture fleeting encounters where childhood imagination and the natural world quietly overlap. Each panel explores a different moment within this imagined journey: waiting beneath the rain, discovering an unexpected companion, and finding comfort in the protective presence of the forest spirit. Viewed together, the three works unfold almost like fragments from a half-remembered story — suspended somewhere between childhood memory, folklore, and dream. Drawing inspiration from Japanese woodblock printing, sumi-e ink traditions, vintage manga, and illustrated storybooks, the series reinterprets an instantly recognizable cultural icon through a restrained monochrome language. Dense textures, engraved-like lines, delicate halftones, and deliberately distressed surfaces recall the character of old prints and treasured books preserved across generations. Deep blacks contrast with luminous areas of untouched paper, allowing silhouette, gesture, expression, and atmosphere to carry the composition. Rather than relying on colour or spectacle, the works focus on intimacy and visual storytelling, giving the series a nostalgic quality that feels both contemporary and timeless. Each artwork is individually **hand-finished using spray paint and pastel crayons**, introducing subtle differences in texture, tonal density, and surface detail. These variations are an intentional part of the process, making every set individually distinctive while preserving the visual continuity of the triptych. Displayed together, the three works create a cinematic sequence and a quiet meditation on friendship, imagination, childhood memory, and the mysterious comfort of the natural world. ### Artwork Details • **Set of 3** hand-finished mixed-media artworks • Individual artwork size: **37 × 22 cm** • Overall triptych size: **37 × 66 cm** • Hand-finished using **spray paint and pastel crayons** • Created on archival **Hahnemühle rice paper for Sumi-e** • Individually **hand-signed and numbered** by the artist • **Certificate of Authenticity** with holographic security seal included • Officially registered in the artist’s studio catalogue • Shipped directly from the artist’s studio ### About the Artist **Æ (Spain, b. 1977)** is a Barcelona-based artist and designer whose work explores the intersection of graphic minimalism, Japanese visual culture, traditional print aesthetics, and contemporary iconography.
