Alan Russett: John Thomas Serres, 1759 – 1825: ‘The Tireless Enterprise

The riveting story of a talented and versatile artist whose love of ships and the sea found expression in many forms of art: drawings, watercolours, oil paintings, prints, large scale panoramas, illustrated books and theatre designs. A profligate and immoral wife blighted his life, but, remaining true to his art, he persevered to create a distinguished body of work for posterity to enjoy. Alan Russett chronicles Serres’s personal struggles and artistic legacy in an attractive volume (280 x 220 mm) of 255 pages and 178 illustrations, most of them in colour. Publ. Sea Torch, Lymington, Hampshire. 2010.
