The work depicts the young Romilly (inspired by the famous tragic medieval legend of the Egremont boy, immortalized in the poems by William Wordsworth and Rogers), caught in a moment of tender and faithful communion with his hunting dog. The boy wears a finely carved medieval tunic, on whose chest sits a heraldic emblem. The figure rests on a pedestal of extraordinary virtuosity, where the marble appears to soften, giving life to detailed ferns and soft moss.
