Alois Kohout (1891-1981) - Scorcio di Anacapri (Capri)

The framed painting depicts an urban view with a large dome, a narrow street in Anacapri on the island of Capri, of the Church of Santa Sofia. Created by the painter Alois Kohout, Czech and Bohemian painter (Prague 1891 – Los Angeles 1981), known during his international career in Paris and the United States also under the Francophone pseudonym Alois Lecoque. Kohout trained in Zagreb and Paris under the guidance of Maestro Baschet. He was strongly influenced by Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, specializing in cityscapes, landscapes and architectural panoramas characterized by a skilled use of light and atmosphere. The painting is an oil on canvas showing a clear Post-Impressionist matrix, typical of the Paris School artists: The brushstrokes are dense and tactile, and the blocks of color do not seek photographic detail but aim to capture volumes and the texture of stone and surfaces through thick layers of pigment. Warm and earthy tones (browns, ochres and brick shades) dominate the foreground and the masonry structures. These tones contrast sharply with the cool blue-gray of the sky and the shadowed dome, creating a twilight, melancholic and evocative atmosphere. The painting was purchased by a private collection, but the heirs have no additional information. Good condition with normal signs of age and wear. The painting comes with a frame, but it is included as a complimentary gift. The painting measures 50x70 cm without the frame. See photos for condition and dimensions.
