The shock was brutal, so that molten material covered 10% of the Earth's surface, with indochinites found even in Antarctica. Tektites are natural glass objects formed by the impact of large meteorites on the Earth’s surface. They are the driest-known minerals, with an average water content of 0.005%, even though most formed due to underwater impacts. Partial fusion of zircon has also been found inside some tektites. This, along with the water content, suggests that tektites formed under very high temperatures and pressures (similar to those needed to form diamond).
