This silkscreen by Amleto Dalla Costa shows a seated woman in an elegant, strongly stylized pose. The composition is built from only a few colors: deep brick red, bright turquoise, and the light paper, which is used as a full-fledged part of the image. Especially the rhythmic pattern of curved lines in the clothing draws attention and gives the otherwise still composition a playful and dynamic character. The turquoise headband returns in the clothing pattern, linking the different parts of the scene. With minimal means – sharp silhouettes, flowing contours, and virtually no shading – Dalla Costa manages to convincingly convey the posture and presence of the woman. The work is thus typical of his decorative, graphics-influenced visual language. Amleto Dalla Costa (Milan, 1929–2024) was a versatile Italian artist, illustrator, designer, and photographer. He began at a young age as a draftsman at the animation studio ARS Film of Nino and Toni Pagot and later worked in graphic design, advertising, and fashion photography. From the 1970s onward, he increasingly focused on his autonomous art and became best known for paintings and silkscreens of elegant, strongly stylized female figures. His visual language is characterized by flowing contours, large flat color fields, and a pronounced simplification of form and detail, while his background as a graphic designer remains clearly recognizable. Women and the female portrait form an important recurring theme in his oeuvre. Dalla Costa exhibited internationally throughout his long career and worked with a variety of techniques, from painting and screen printing to sculpture and photography.
