‡ AN EBONISED WRITING TABLE BY CURRIE & CO, CALCUTTA, CIRCA 1840 The top lined with red linen cloth above a frieze with two drawers and a kneehole, the reverse with three drawers, on turned and facetted legs with brass caps and castors, stamped several times CURRIE & CO CALCUTTA 80cm high, 180cm wide, 87cm deep Currie & Co. were among the most prominent cabinet-makers listed in Calcutta in 1830, supplying the local elite including British colonial administrators and military officers. Their designs reflected prevailing British fashion of the William IV and early Victorian periods. Condition Report: Fair condition, structurally secure with wear and tear consistent with ageand use. There are dents marks and scratches and shrinkage cracks. The cloth lining is worn and the joints of the framing of the top are opening up. Some drawer locks removed. The ebonised decoration worn and scuffed.
