An extensive Royal Copenhagen ‘Flora Danica’ porcelain dinner service

An extensive Royal Copenhagen ‘Flora Danica’ porcelain dinner service

comprising: 24 pierced dessert plates, 6 dinner plates, 6 soup bowls, 6 starter plates, 6 butter dishes, and 5 side plates, each hand-painted with a floral specimen with gilt border, with painted Latin botanical titles, painted and printed and factory marks, (53), pierced dessert plates 23cm diameter; dinner plates 25.3cm diameter; soup bowls 25cm diameter; starter plates 22cm diameter; butter dishes 7.8cm diameter; side plates 14cm diameter, The original 'Flora Danica' service was commissioned in 1790 by Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark from the Royal Copenhagen manufactory. Thought to be a diplomatic gift for Catherine the Great of Russia to rival Wedgwood's 'Frog' service, its production between 1790 and 1802 was at great expense. Each piece was painted with a specimen taken directly from 'Flora Danica', the botanical encyclopaedia begun in 1761, which recorded plants from across the Danish monarchy, including Norway, Greenland and Iceland. Plants were faithfully reproduced, often with roots, with separate specimens used for lids and bases. On the reverse, the Latin name was inscribed in black underglaze, together with a reference to the relevant volume and plate of the encyclopaedia. Several pieces were lost in the Christiansborg Palace fire of 1884, but 1,530 of the original 1,802 remain in the Royal Danish Collection.
