Ancient Greek, Archaic Period Terracotta Oil Lamp with Central Tube

An unusual ancient Greek terracotta oil lamp with a prominent central tube, dating to the Archaic period. The lamp has a broad circular body with a deep open reservoir surrounded by a substantial rounded rim. From the centre of the reservoir rises a distinctive hollow, funnel-shaped tube, while a projecting nozzle with a large oval wick opening extends from one side. The strongly modelled circular rim is decorated with several concentric grooves. Further dark-painted concentric bands are preserved around the inner reservoir and central tube, providing an attractive contrast with the light beige to buff-coloured ceramic body. The central tube is one of the most distinctive features of the lamp. Comparable early Greek wheel-made lamps with a hollow funnel-shaped central element are known from the Eastern Greek world. The nozzle is short and broad with a large opening for the wick. Its substantial construction and direct connection with the open oil reservoir are characteristic of early Greek lamp manufacture. The reverse is wheel-finished and largely undecorated, clearly displaying the circular turning marks produced during manufacture. Typology and Dating The form belongs to the tradition of wheel-made Greek ceramic oil lamps of the Archaic period. A particularly relevant comparison is preserved in the British Museum's Naukratis collection: a circular East Greek wheel-made lamp with a funnel-shaped open central tube and an oval opening at one side, probably manufactured at Ephesus and dated to approximately 600–575 BC. Related East Greek lamps from Naukratis with circular bodies, central elements and projecting wick nozzles are likewise dated within the 6th century BC. The present lamp shares the characteristic circular open reservoir, central hollow tube, wheel-made construction and projecting wick opening of this early group. On typological grounds, an attribution to the Eastern Greek world during the Archaic period, circa 6th century BC, appears appropriate. A more precise production centre should not be assigned without archaeological find context. Function The circular reservoir originally contained the oil used as fuel for the lamp. A wick was inserted through the opening in the projecting nozzle, where it absorbed the oil and provided the flame. The unusual central hollow tube is a recognised feature of certain early Greek lamp types. Its exact practical function is not always certain and may have varied between related forms. The combination of the open reservoir, prominent central tube and separate wick opening represents an early stage in the development of Greek ceramic lighting devices, before the more enclosed lamp forms that became increasingly widespread during the Classical and Hellenistic periods. Condition Good condition considering its considerable age. The circular body, reservoir, projecting nozzle and central hollow tube are preserved. The surface displays extensive age-related wear, earthy and mineral deposits, areas of discolouration and minor chips and irregularities. Dark-painted concentric decoration remains visible around the inner reservoir, rim and central tube, although it is worn and partially lost in places. The rim of the central tube displays minor ancient chipping and irregularity. The reverse retains clearly visible wheel marks and natural surface deposits. No obvious modern additions or extensive restorations are identifiable from the photographs. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. Provenance Formerly in the Madeleine & Erich Dammann Collection, Germany. Acquired during the collectors’ extensive travels between 1950 and 1970. The collection is documented in Germany by 1970 through historical photographs of the family residence and subsequently remained in continuous family ownership. The objects were acquired privately during the collectors’ travels. As was customary for private purchases made at local markets during the 1950s and 1960s, purchase receipts or invoices were generally neither issued nor requested. Historical photographs and biographical documentation relating to the Dammann Collection are available and support the long-standing provenance of the collection.
