ARCHAIC GREEK – MONUMENTAL BRONZE SHORT SWORD – 60 CM Culture: Ancient Greek Period: Archaic Period Date: circa 7th–6th century BC Material: Bronze Object: Short sword / sword blade Length: 60 cm Weight: 531 g Description An impressive Ancient Greek bronze short sword, attributed to the Archaic Period, circa 7th–6th century BC. The weapon measures an exceptional 60 cm in length and preserves a long, slender double-edged blade of elegant proportions. The blade gradually tapers towards the point and is strengthened by a pronounced longitudinal central midrib, accompanied by parallel longitudinal mouldings extending along much of its length. This reinforced construction provided rigidity while maintaining a relatively slender profile. At the base, the blade expands into broad, gently rounded shoulders before terminating in a short solid tang, originally concealed within an organic hilt, most probably made from wood, bone or another perishable material, now lost. The substantial dimensions and weight — 60 cm and 531 g — give the weapon a particularly imposing character. The surface preserves extensive archaeological patination, with green and brown copper corrosion products, mineral deposits, pitting and irregular surface alteration. The cutting edges display losses and wear consistent with the archaeological condition of the object. The attribution to the Ancient Greek Archaic tradition is based on typological characteristics. Condition Archaeological condition. Extensive oxidation, mineralisation, encrustation and surface wear. Losses and irregularities along the cutting edges. The short tang is preserved, while the original organic components of the hilt are no longer present. Please refer carefully to the photographs for the complete condition. References A. M.
