Elegant bronze sculpture depicting Balakrishna, the infant form of the god Krishna, immortalized in a dancing gesture while holding in the right hand a ball of butter, a direct reference to the well-known episodes of his childhood when the little god would slyly and innocently pilfer butter. The figure is rendered with intense plastic vitality and stands out for a rhythmic posture: the left leg supports the entire structure on the double square base, while the right, raised forward, rests delicately on a lotus flower that blooms symbolically from the base below. This emphasis on the raised foot, associated with the lotus, gives the scene a highly symbolic value, reinforcing the divine connotation of the gesture. The body of Balakrishna is modeled with full volumes and soft lines, evoking childhood in its sensually rounded and vitalistic fullness. The surface, luminous and golden, is achieved through the traditional lost-wax casting technique, an expression of the refined bronze artistry of South India. The bronze, likely of a composition akin to panchaloha, the traditional five-metal alloy of sacred significance, exudes warm, deep reflections similar to gilding. The patina is lively, with evident signs of wear from ritual use: residues of red powder, presumably sandalwood or vermilion, remain in the recesses and more protected contours of the figure. Ornamental elements such as ankle bells, earrings, and belt pendants are still legible but worn by time and ritual contact, giving the work a sense of venerable antiquity. The stylized yet expressive face features marked traits and a contemplative, almost ecstatic expression, perfectly coherent with the dancing moment. In terms of style, typology, and patina, this sculpture can be situated within the context of South India, most likely Tamil Nadu, with a plausible dating to the XVIII century. The iconography of navanita nritya, i.e., Krishna dancing with the butter ball, is well documented in devotional artistic tradition and finds here a particularly harmonious rendering, in the synthesis between childish playfulness and archetypal sacredness.
